Choosing a safer home for API keys
API keys, OAuth tokens and developer credentials should not live in screenshots, plain-text notes or arbitrary shared files. Compare workflows and their security limits.
What to evaluate
- Where plaintext secrets are exposed and how encryption keys are managed
- Backup, recovery and device loss procedures
- Credential sharing, rotation and audit requirements
- Scope of browser, desktop and team integrations
Decision notes
A key manager should be evaluated for its threat model, encryption design, auditability, recovery policy and integrations. Never select a vault based only on a marketing claim that it is encrypted.

| Option | Good fit | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| ConteXt (planet.X) | Credential and API-key command-center concept focused on local-first organization. | Research/beta capabilities vary. Do not assume audited encryption, production readiness or team security guarantees. |
| Doppler | Centralized secrets and configuration management for application deployments. | Doppler documents environment-scoped project permissions and restricted service tokens; assess hosting dependency and rotation policy. |
| 1Password developer tools | Established password vault workflows with developer-oriented secret access. | Confirm vault sharing policies, CLI integration and your organization’s access model. |
How to choose
For individual projects, narrow permissions and secure local practices may be sufficient. For teams and production environments, audited access, centralized rotation and recovery typically matter more than visual polish. Assess vendor documentation and security reviews before storing production credentials.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put production secrets in a browser extension?
Only after reviewing its security model and permissions. Prefer approved secret-management systems and least-privilege credentials.
Is a local vault automatically safer than cloud storage?
No. Local security depends on device protection, cryptographic implementation, backups and recovery; cloud systems introduce different trade-offs.
Can I use one API key across all environments?
Separate credentials for development and production and use least-privilege scopes where the provider supports it.
